Mama Mia, That’s Italian at Beccofino Trattoria!

Recently, a SPICE!! reader emailed us and recommended we check out Beccofino Trattoria in Chiang Mai. Best known for its two locations in Bangkok we were curious to see how the Chiang Mai location measured up. As we were in Chiang Mai last month preparing for this Chiang Mai special issue, we followed his suggestion.

Mama Mia, That’s Italian at Beccofino Trattoria!
Overall we highly recommend the Beccofino Trattoria in Chiang Mai save the modest décor and a location a bit out of the way.  The plus side was the service, the great menu and the excellent value for money with the delicious food- and a true culinary experience. We will make it a “must-eat” every time we return to Chiang Mai. Beccofino Trattoria is now one of our favorite restaurants in Chiang Mai, one of our favorite cities.
Partner/Chef Angelo Rottoli was a gracious and accommodating host even though he was very busy that night as it was the last night of the First Nimanhaemin Fair he was participating in.
We sent two of our staff to scope it out and the report was the Beccofino Trattoria booth was very popular and a big hit at the fair
Chef Angelo told us the Beccofino’s Chiang Mai is the third restaurant he has opened:  There are two in Bangkok, one known as the Beccofino Restaurant & Grill on Soi Thong Lor (Sukumvit 55) and the other on Convent Road in Silom.

This newer Beccofino Trattoria is located in a newer Nimanhaemin area of Chiang Mai a little ways down Soi 7 off Nimanhaemin Road. The bistro features delicious Italian food and a stone pizza oven. There’s a selection of good-valued Italian wines, chosen by wine connoisseur and partner Kit Marshal. The “icing on the cake” was the very cute waiter that assisted us in our menu selections. The large dining room has large murals of Venice on the walls and a very contemporary feel.

From the extensive Italian menu, we tried the Italian antipasto, with a satisfying and tasty selection of raw and marinated veggies and delicious cold meats. A warm seafood salad with tiger prawns and calamari was scrumptious. We sampled two pizzas: ‘Beccofino’ with Italian sausages, spinach and champignon mushrooms; and pizza with four different cheeses. Let’s just say that these pizzas were outrageously good and unlike anything you might be served at your local pizza parlor. A huge variety of toppings are available.

For the pasta course, we tried the spaghetti with Japanese King Crab with fresh tomatoes and white wine sauce. I love crab and I adored this dish. It was absolutely mouth watering. The menu also includes a tempting array of meat, fish and homemade pasta dishes, including potato gnocchi.

Prices are quite reasonable for this quality cuisine. Most entrees are under three hundred baht. Chef Angelo outdid himself in treating us to a delicious meal served with warmth and aplomb. When you dine at Beccofino, he’ll make you feel like an old friend. If you’re in Chiang Mai, do yourself a favor and experience Beccofino Trattoria.
