Pattaya the self-proclaimed, “Extreme City” is a beach resort and city rolled into one well-laid out area and is the most relaxed, gay-friendly place in Thailand. Bangkok and Pattaya account for 70% of the gay scene in Thailand with Pattaya having the most foreign gay residents. Pattaya is divided into three areas: Naklua, Central Pattaya and Jomtien. All the action in Central Pattaya is between Second and Beach Roads which run North to South and Pattaya Klang (Central Pattaya Road) and Pattaya Tai (South Pattaya Road) which run East to West. Jomtien action is in the Jomtien Complex on Thappraya Road.

Pattaya has hundreds of restaurants, bars and hotels catering to westerners and most of the signs are in English. Compared to many cities, prices here are still reasonable. A good meal will only set you back a couple of hundred baht. Alternatively, if you want to splurge, there are plenty of “fine dining” choices—just refer to our recommendations and listings in this issue. A night in a fine hotel is much cheaper than Bangkok. The new Dusit D2 boutique hotel on Second Road even has a gay night at Deep Splash Bar. Getting around is a cinch. Pattaya’s attractions are easy to navigate by baht buses which are really just blue pickup trucks with seats in the back used as taxis circling along defined main routes for as little as 10 baht per person.

DAYTIME FUN
During daylight hours, visit the gay beach located in the Dong Tan Beach section of Jomtien. If you are in central Pattaya hop on Jomtien-bound “baht bus” (pronounced Songtao in Thai) at Second Road at Pattaya Tai (South Pattaya Road), stay on as it weaves around, goes up and down the hill of Thappraya Road, passes Bruno’s Restaurant (the most famous and elegant) and get off when you spot the sea as you head towards (Jomtien Beach Road). You will see a police box. Walk past the 7-11 on your right until you see the foot path and continue past the Avalon Resort.
The gay beach area starts just past the public toilet kiosk and you will see various deck chair concessions distinguished by the color of the wooden chair frames (bring a towel to sit on). Pick out a chair (about 30 baht rental). Of course, the main attraction for many, are the boys strutting up and down the beach. On offer are the typical sea activities like jet skiing and parasailing. There are also lots of young men who, for about 200 baht, will give you a one-hour massage right on the beach (at your chair or lay down on a towel behind the chairs). You can also get manicures and pedicures, and buy all sorts of food and merchandise from passing vendors.

NIGHTIME FUN
The main gay areas where you find hundreds of cute Thai guys as hosts, dancers and companions are in Boyztown in central Pattaya off Second Road (starts the first block north of Pattaya Tai), Sunee Plaza off Second Road Soi 17 and Jomtien Plaza Complex in the Jomtien southern section of Pattaya off Thappraya Road.  Boyztown  area,  Sunee Plaza and Jomtien  Complex has many gay and gay-friendly businesses, but some also cater to a mixed crowd because many other businesses are straight featuring fun nightlife and great restaurants.
There are many, many straight beer bars & Go Go’s all along Central Pattaya’s Second Road and Sois 7 & 8. In Naklua (the northern part of Pattaya) along Naklua Beach Road and Jomtien (the southern part of Pattaya) in Soi Whitehouse of Jomtien Beach Road too. Many of these beer bars have Ladyboys available for drinks or private intimacy. Although most beer bars cater to straight clientele, they are good to go to if you like ladyboys.
Most gays come to Pattaya for the vibrant man clubs,  go gos, bars and assorted nightlife. The scene is commercial and most of the dancers, waiters and bar staff can be “taken off” the premises. Most of the gay venues are clustered in three specific areas mentioned above and are detailed on the Pattaya Map in this issue of SPICE! To know everything gay Pattaya has to offer you have many choices for cabarets, shows, go gos and places that run the gambit of elegance to bare essentials.

Pattayaland and Boyztown

As is often the case in this paradoxical city there are often several names for the areas you will want to go in Central Pattaya. Locals call the Boyztown areas sois “Pattayaland Sois.”  The blue round street sign will say Soi 13/3, they call it “Pattayaland 2” and the sign that says Soi 13/4, is called “Pattayaland 1”. Look at our map to help guide you as those areas are marked well for you to find.  Starting with the Original Boyztown soi, which starts the first soi north after Pattaya Tai and the next 2 after that on Second Road in Central Pattaya and has lots of gay bars and a variety of boys for every taste. In Boyztown, the gayest area in Central Pattaya, you’ll want to try Boyz Boyz Boyz, the original Go Go club that offers a late night cabaret show. The Copa Showbar has a cabaret and an erotic swimming show starting at 10:30 pm. nightly. At Funny Boys, you’ll find low key music and a “living room atmosphere” with a selection of friendly go-go boys. For a different perspective, try the live lounge entertainment at Café Royalé (also offers lodging). The Ambiance Hotel in Boyztown is a great place to stay, offers a good restaurant, and is the most famous gay and gay-friendly hotel in Pattaya. Wild West Boys, on the next soi north (Pattayaland soi 2 or blue sign 13/3), presents two nightly boy shows at 10:30 & midnight, sometimes a bit naughty, but mild compared to some of those on Soi Duangthawee in Bangkok. Penthouse Hotel on this soi is an amazing hotel with each room decorated in a unique and exciting way and is near their Ladyboy bar called Pattaya Obsessions and adjacent to Kitty Club which has some beautiful Ladyboys.  The next soi north offers many Go Go to explore also, but a bit more with a bit more variety,  The new D2 Botique Hotel is near Boyztown on Second Road and on Friday evenings presents “deep splash” for gays at their Deep Bar featuring an upscale intimate atmosphere with music videos and changing performances & events.
Amor Restaurant is excellent home-style cooking from the UK & America with an international menu and daily special. New Orleans Restaurant is elegant, yet inexpensive. Both are located between Boyztown and Pattayaland soi 2 on a small connecting road.

Jomtien Complex

Another great Gay and gay-friendly area is in Jomtien Complex area as a lower-key alternative to Pattayaland and Sunee Plaza because there are many straight bars and fine restaurants there, as well as gay shows, go gos and terrace bars.
You’ll find a variety of restaurants, host bars, entertainment venues and massage parlors, including bars like Question Mark? (stays opens late), Dolce Vita, Two Faces, which are popular host bars, that also offer massage services upstairs. Other venues worth a look are Monty’s (sexy boy show), the fabulous new “The Venue” with several entertaining Cabaret shows nightly from 9:30 pm and offers deluxe rooms at a very good value. Also good live entertainment is at CAZZO Music and the new Bondi Beach Bar featuring various nightly entertainment.

The (New) Sunee Plaza

The Gay area in Sunee Plaza, in South Pattaya, between Soi VC and Soi Yensabai off Second Road’s Soi 17 has been rebranding its self with a consortium of 19 venue owners united to clean up the image of Sunee Plaza. It has many go-go clubs and open-air host bars and is considered the least expensive of the three Pattaya Gay areas.
SPICE! editors recently went on an inspection tour and talked with this group of  business owners who assured us they are self-policing the problem with its previous reputation of some bars having under-aged workers and of police raids looking for guys using Yaba, a drug like speed.  We observed the area is safe to walk and the bars and go gos filled with foreigners having a good time.  If you’re into more femme-looking boys, this is the place for you. The locals prefer places like Memories Music Bar and Mike’s La Cage bar for cheap drinks and the various monthly events they offer.  Some popular Go Go’s are; Krazy Dragon, My Mic, Nice Boys and Euro Boys. The Little Mango, Balkan Express and Po Pot restaurants are all good restaurants in Sunee Plaza area. The association of business owners plans a big street party to commemorate the New Sunee Plaza in mid-November.

Late Night in Pattaya

Pattaya offers all this and several late “After-Hours” Thai-style dance venues with sexy Coyote boys and cabaret acts to enjoy. Some of your wildest Pattaya nights may be found at The Dave Man Club and NAB Man Club.
Pattaya offers several mixed discos that are quite popular with Thai guys, including the X-Zyte on Third Road .  Walking Street off Beach Road has gay-friendly discos which cater to everyone like Lucifer, Tony’s, Marine and Insomnia.

A place to meet young men, not necessarily Thai, and not money boys, is Sansuk Sauna, (Pattaya’s version to Bangkok’s Babylon) off Thappaya Road. The lavish, three-story facility offers a swimming pool, steam, sauna, fitness equipment, and a dark room with private cubicles. Food and drink are available, and there’s an adjoining Sansuk Guesthouse.
Pattaya offers it all!
