Sydney Mardi Gras 2010
This year Sydney, Australia held the 32nd annual Gay & Lesbian Mardi Gras parade and adjoining parties. What started out as a protest march in 1978 has blossomed into the world’s largest annual Gay and Lesbian festival. The festival takes place over a two-week period in February and March every year, and includes many parties with huge world-class singers and DJ’s. Big names performing this year included George Michael, Kelly Rowland, Adam Lambert, and top DJ’s David Guetta and Carl Cox.
This year’s parade was the largest ever, with over 9500 participants and 135 floats. The iconic Amanda Lepore – arguably the world’s most famous transsexual – was the Chief of Parade. Miss Lepore wore as little as possible, while waving to the enthusiastic crowd, clad only in pasties and a rhinestone thong. Her selection as Chief of Parade signaled to the world that transsexuals matter and are mainstream in today’s world.
The Asian population in Sydney is quite large, with Nationals from Thailand, Vietnam, Philippines and China making up the bulk of the immigration. The parade had several Asian-themed entries that clearly indicated the significant percentage of the population that is born overseas. There were two entries with a Thai flavor, with colorful costumes and plenty of glitz and glamour. One of the most popular parade entries every year is the Asian Marching Boys, who returned this year after a few years away.

Apart from the hugely popular parade, there are several huge parties that take place over two weekends. These events are designed to appeal to the wide range of tastes and needs of Mardi Gras visitors. The two-week festival includes a Fair Day, a post-parade carnival, a pool party, a dance party overlooking the Sydney Opera House, and a massive indoor circuit-style party capping off the end of the events.
The final party – simply called Mardi Gras Party – is the largest party of its kind in the hemisphere. It attracts about 20,000 people and occupies 4 venues to hold them all. This year saw 20 DJ’s play from 10pm until 8 am the next day. Many attendees clearly spent a lot of effort designing elaborate costumes, and some spent equal time creating outfits that covered very little.
The Sydney Gay & Lesbian Mardi Gras attracts visitors from all over the world every year. It continues to be one of the most important annual events in Sydney, regardless of sexual orientation. Thai Airways operates daily flights in to Sydney.
